I tested the 1 gb separate in both inputs, nothing, same thing. The laptop starts but there is no backlight. I will add on stuff later. I unplugged the laptop immediately and have left it unplugged since then. THe last week before this total failure, I had a number of times the computer would be fine and suddenly a blue screen would flash and the computer would reboot before I could read it.

Re-plugged in the laptop…. Took out the memory, and other easily removable externals.

Maybe dfll laptop shuts down because of overheating? Have you tried replacing the memory module with a known good module? Is the memory module the RAM itself? I must say that you all are pros!
At first my Presario would boot up fine and run. Try reseating the memory module.
Try removing the hard drive and powering up the laptop. Test the AC adapter first.
Jose, Take a closer look at the power jack. I thought maybe this could be the problem. I put the laptop back together again and was pleased to see the power light come on when i pluged the power cable in.
I figured out that the problem was with the heat sink being too much tightly fastened on the CPU I had fasten that myself once when cleaning the fan. In this case you have to replace the entire motherboard. The screen remains black throughout.
Who knows, it might help. Removed battery and checked with Multi-meter and found power going to battery. Actually the LED light was flashing for a few minutes before it too went off. All LED Bulps are glowing when we turn on the system. Amazing blog…thank you so much. No beeps, no video, no HDD activity. Hi… Not sure if you can help. I took it in to get it looked at and when I went to show them what was happening, it started up!!! It happens because there is no power coming to the motherboard. Try removing them one by one and test the laptop with only one module in place.
