As caps reduce in value their ability to pass low end is compromised. The dbx system, however, exhibits artifacts even when the deck is properly calibrated. If that is not it, I do know from some experience that some dBx units filter very low end base so as to not allow record warps to cause error in the RMS detection circuits. I don’t hear any “expansion” at all. It’s not even a serious debate at all. If not quiet enough for your taste, then I would recommend Dolby, or a better deck. With this 4bx get better dynamic range, punch, and details in the transients of your tracks in the mix or mastering, add details punch and transients in their drum buss in a mixing session, for example.

The 4BX is not a noise reduction processor, it’s a dynamic range processor. I could say the same about the SAE and my Burwen processors. I don’t wish to offend anybody, but I must tell it like it is. For this unit to cause a frequency skew with your equipment like you describe is certainly a bad thing- I would contact dBx and see what they say about such a condition.
