The book was in bad condition. It is also the time when devil’s carpentjer lives up to his role. History tells us that Columbus was hardly a master seaman, and yet his fallibility did not undercut his pompousness, at least not in Carpentier’s portrait of Columbus’ ruminations on the lieutenants who question his abilities.
Along the way readers gets a look into the imagined mind of Columbus as he goes through his attempts to get funding for his voyages.
