Martin was a talented writer from the start. But if I hadn’t fallen in love with A Song of Ice and Fire, I would’ve never turned enough Dreamsong pages to get to some of the best short fiction I’ve ever read. And that mindset made reading this a true joy. This Tower of Ashes – The main character’s journey is wonderful, as is the world building. This volume contained fewer but longer stories than its predecessor but held the same format of grouping stories by theme, each with an introduction by the author.
Martin dreaksongs a brilliant writer and this was an enjoyable collection. Jan 09, Dalon Koubek rated it really liked it. I had never heard about this project. Bitter feelings and regrets over lost opportunities surface, even as one of the group reveals he has been manipulating their lives through time travel.

Shell Games didn’t really do anything for me, probably rrr I was pissed off by the time I approached what I would consider the meat of the plot, while I found From the Journal gekrge Xavier Desmond preachy, quite boring, and, unless I missed something painfully clever during my read-through, seemed to serve little more point than to provide world-building exposition through the eyes of an under-developed character I didn’t really care about.
Best story in the book, without discussion. The world doesn’t get much weight here, but the characters make up for it.

What follows are those stories complete. GRRM is a very versatile writer. Good concept alone is one thing, the story is slow moving, but managed to be very thought provoking. I can’t say enough. We are therefore all together in our soul crushing solitude, and yet, even knowing this it does not dreamsons ease.

For now I’ll just put down my thoughts on some of the stories. They are all unique in their own way, and demonstrate an author who is completely confident in his craft.

Lastly, The Pear-shaped Man is, actually, way too creepy. He began writing very young, selling monster stories to other neighborhood children for pennies, dramatic readings included.
This doesn’t work as a stand alone story The second story is an epistolary tale that originally formed the interstitial sections connecting and introducing each story in the fourth volume, Aces Abroad. In parts a bit over the top for my taste though. About an obese guy who wants to lose weight and starts the so-called monkey treatment. Here Martin introduces one of his most iconic characters.
I didn’t enjoy the Wildcard stories much nor the TV scipts too much either. The screenplay was tedious and boring. A good collection of shorts: One might argue that the protagonist is just experiencing a dream after being bitten by the female spider and that’s all there is to the ending. All of them are really good and in some cases exceeds what I was expecting: Nickel rated it it was amazing.
However, exploration alone cannot make a good science fiction story. Remembering Melody – One of those classic ghost stories: Who knows GRRM can write horror so well. That would explain why Squirrel has eight white legs in the end. Martin’s commentary is honest — he knows the early stuff isn’t good.
