Martin was a talented writer from the start. But if I hadn’t fallen in love with A Song of Ice and Fire, I would’ve never turned enough Dreamsong pages to get to some of the best short fiction I’ve ever read. And that mindset made reading this a true joy. This Tower of Ashes – The main character’s journey is wonderful, as is the world building. This volume contained fewer but longer stories than its predecessor but held the same format of grouping stories by theme, each with an introduction by the author.

However, exploration alone cannot make a good science fiction story. Remembering Melody – One of those classic ghost stories: Who knows GRRM can write horror so well. That would explain why Squirrel has eight white legs in the end. Martin’s commentary is honest — he knows the early stuff isn’t good.
