Gopinath Mohanty’s ‘Paraja’ The money-lender’s clutches are like a spider’s; and tor the victim the web is invisible until too late. He endures everything without protest even when he is duped by the court people and loses his favourite land praaja Bisoi. Unlike Job, Sukru Jani does not even possess the patience to test the gods. The novelist narrates their attachment to their land in a very intimate language: Tribal life is punctuated with many festivals, but chief among them is the Festival of Spring —a fortnight of revelry, hunting and feasting.


Work is forgotten and the drums throb incessantly, day and night, to the rhythm of the dance; the old year is drummed away. The novel – the translation of which from Oriya to English took over four decades – also studies the encroachment of the world of materialism on the simple life of the tribal.
